League Information
League Duration: The Concord Developmental Basketball League (CDBL) is for Kindergarten through 6th-grade students living in the Concord School District. The 3rd through 6th-grade group runs about 9 weeks from October to December. The Kindergarten through 2nd-grade group runs for Four weeks in November.
Session Structure: The first half of the session consists of fundamental skill development and drills. The second half of the session will consist of games. Sessions will be every Saturday, primarily at Concord Junior High School. Check the schedule for details.
Player Evaluations: These are used to rate player skills at both the beginning and end of the season to show their improvement. Players are evaluated on basic basketball skills such as dribbling, shooting, and defense. The player evaluations are used to match teams as evenly as possible.
Season Tournament: To finish the season, a team tournament will be held along with an awards ceremony to celebrate the achievements of the players.
Progression: The league is run under the direction of Concord High School varsity basketball coach Derrick DeShone.
College Scholarships: The mission of CDBL is to not only develop one’s basketball skills but to raise money for the CDBL Scholarship Fund. CDBL has provided scholarships totaling $19,000 since 2007 to graduating Concord High School Seniors who have participated in CDBL for at least one year. We raise money to support scholarships through our spirit wear campaign and concessions.
Your continued support is greatly appreciated.
CDBL Player/Parent Policies
Please be on time.
Please ensure that transportation arrangements are made for players if you are unable to attend the sessions.
Seating is available for all to watch. If you have younger children with you, it is your responsibility to supervise them. They are not allowed to run around the gyms or the hallways.
Enter at Door 12 at the back of the Junior High School.
Refreshments will be sold in the hallway before, during, and after the sessions. All profits are applied directly to the CDBL Scholarship Fund.
Yelling or disrespecting the referees, coaches, or players (including your own) will not be tolerated. We emphasize with the players that they worry about their own game and not the referees.
Referees are high school players, many of which have participated in the CDBL program in the past. They may not always get the calls correct, but neither do paid professional referees. Remember, we as adults need to set an example of good sportsmanship for both our own kids and the other players.

Game Rules
Games will have two halves with a continuous clock (5 minutes between each half). Substitutions will be at the 1/3 and 2/3 mark without stopping the clock. All players play the same amount of time in a game. See using the Player Playtime Matrix.
No fast breaks, except in a steal situation for the Beta League (3rd/4th grades). Fast breaks are allowed for the Alpha League (5th/6th grades).
At the end of every game, each player from each team shoots one free throw. Made free throws count toward the final game score.
Defense can not apply pressure until the offense advances the ball past half-court.
Prior to each quarter players will be matched up for defensive purposes. Players must only cover their matched partner. Colored wrist bands are provided to the younger players to help the players identify who they are to cover. No double teaming . A player may stop the advancement of another player causing a double team situation, but must immediately return to covering his matched player after the advancement is stopped. Zone defenses are not allowed.
When a player is fouled in the act of shooting, one foul shot (worth two points) will be awarded. A player may be removed from the game by the referee for excessive fouling. If a player is removed for foul reasons, the time out from the game does not constitute "non-playing" time for rule #1.
The foul line for the younger leagues will be two feet closer than the standard foul line.
The Alpha League will utilize the standard foul line. The free throw will be negated if the player steps on or over the free-throw line during the shot.
If a player argues with a referee's call, or in the opinion of the referee a player has a significant attitude problem, the referee, at his discretion, may have the player removed from the game. The referee must explain the reason for the decision to the player and the player's coach. The purpose of this rule is to emphasize that good sportsmanship is critical to the game. Continued issues may result in sitting out the remainder of the game and expulsion from the League.
